What causes mold?
The conditions for mold to grow would be if the humidor is too moist or if there is not enough exchange of air between the humidor and its environment. Be careful on how much water you add the humidifier. It should be moist, not damp. If you see water dripping out of a standard sponge humidifier, you’ve added too much. Let the humidifier sit for 10-15 minutes to drip out the excess water to ensure the condition of the humidor does not promote mold. Additionally, be sure to wipe down the humidor with either distilled water or an activator solution prior to storing the cigars in the humidor.
What makes the humidity level so important in a humidor?
The wrapper and the tobacco of a cigar is grown and made where the relative humidity ranges between 60-75%. The moisture is kept within the cigar which gives it the unique taste and flavor that makes a quality cigar. It is important to maintain that moisture of the cigar to keep it in its integrity. If it dries out, the cigar itself becomes both dry and brittle and has little chance of rehydrating or ever becoming again the premium cigar it once was. It is primarily because of this that the humidity level kept in a humidor is constantly maintained.
